How to swap a VQ35HR from a 350Z or G35 into a 240SX S13 or S14. Mount options, driveshaft considerations, ECU, and why the VQ makes a surprisingly capable drift and street platform.
The VQ35 in a 240SX is a sleeper move. Most people overlook it in favor of the SR20DET or LS swap, but the 350Z V6 produces 306 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque in a naturally aspirated package that is easy to maintain and nearly bulletproof.
VQ35 variants: The HR variant (2007–2008 350Z, 2007+ G35) makes 306 hp from the factory and has a stronger short block than the earlier DE. HR is the pick if budget allows. DE is perfectly capable for builds under 350whp.
Sourcing: VQ35HR engines from wrecked 350Zs and G35s run $1,200–2,500. Source a complete engine with accessory drive and intake manifold. The 6-speed CD009 transmission from the 350Z is strongly preferred for its tighter shift feel and strength.
Mount kits: Sikky Manufacturing makes the definitive S13/S14 VQ35 swap kit. It includes motor mounts, transmission crossmember, and an oil pan spacer. The kit is well-engineered and fits correctly.
Axles: Custom axles are required. Driveshaft Shop makes VQ35/240SX-specific axles for approximately $600 per side.
ECU: Uprev tuning software for the factory Nissan ECU is the standard approach and works excellently for both DE and HR variants. For turbo builds, a standalone ECU is required.
Power upgrades: The VQ35HR is supercharger-friendly — a Stillen or Torque Solutions supercharger adds 60–80 hp in bolt-on fashion. Turbocharged builds on a standalone ECU push 350–450whp.
