Everything you need to know about swapping a Toyota 2JZ-GTE into a 240SX, E36, or RX-7. Engine prep, standalone ECU, turbo sizing, wiring, supporting mods, and tuning roadmap.
The 2JZ-GTE is legendary: stock internals reliably hold 600whp, and with forged pistons and rods it is a 1,500hp platform. If you are going big, this is the swap.
Step one is sourcing a good core. JDM 2JZ-GTE engines from imported Supras or Aristo sedans typically come in at $2,500–4,500. Inspect the head for cracks and compression-test each cylinder before the swap.
The stock VVTi intake cam is excellent for 600–800whp builds. Above that, go with Kelford 264 or Brian Crower 272 cam profiles. Stock head gasket is fine to 600whp; above that use a HKS Stopper or Cometic multi-layer gasket with ARP head studs.
For the turbo, the stock twin turbo setup is only good for about 350whp. For street/track builds targeting 450–600whp, a single Garrett G25-550 or G30-770 is the go-to. For drag builds over 800whp, a Precision 6266 is the classic choice.
ECU: The 2JZ stock ECU will not work in a chassis swap. You need a standalone unit. Haltech Elite 2500, AEM Infinity 6, or Link G4X are the top three choices. All three have base maps available.
Fuel system: The 2JZ at 600whp needs a minimum of 1,000cc/min injectors and a Walbro 450 or DW400 fuel pump. At 800whp+, go dual Walbro 450 or a single Aeromotive 340.
Final tip: Get a proper tune from a 2JZ-experienced tuner. A bad tune will kill an otherwise perfect build. Budget $800–1,200 for a full dyno tune.
