The ultimate guide to dropping a GM LS3 6.2L V8 into a Miata, E36, or RX-7. Covers engine mounts, transmission options, driveshaft, wiring harness, cooling, and first startup checklist.
The LS3 V8 swap is one of the most rewarding builds in the sport compact world. You get 430–530 hp from a package that fits in engine bays you would not believe, backed by one of the largest aftermarket ecosystems on the planet.
Before you start pulling motors, get your swap kit sorted. Firm Motor Mounts (for Miata), Hinson Motorsports (for E36), and Pettit Racing kits are all excellent starting points. The kit will define your crossmember placement, transmission tunnel requirements, and subframe geometry.
For the engine itself, a used LS3 from a wrecked Camaro or Corvette is the cleanest donor. Expect 60,000–90,000-mile cores for $3,500–5,500. If budget allows, a crate LS3 from GM Performance is $8,500 and comes with a warranty.
Transmission choices: The T56 Magnum 6-speed is the gold standard pairing. The Tremec TKX is lighter and slightly cheaper. For drag-only builds, a 4L80E automatic with a good torque converter is fast and easy to tune.
Wiring is the most intimidating part for first-timers. A standalone harness from Speartech or Painless eliminates all the non-essential sensors and gives you a clean plug-and-play setup. Budget $800–1,400 for a quality standalone harness.
Cooling is critical. The LS3 puts out significant heat. Run a CSF or Mishimoto 3-row aluminum radiator, a 180-degree thermostat, and make sure your fan setup can pull enough airflow at idle.
First startup checklist: Verify oil pressure before cranking, confirm fuel pressure at 58 psi, check coolant level, and verify all ground straps are solid. Fire it up, check for leaks, and let it reach operating temp before revving it out.
