Guide to dropping a Honda F20C from an S2000 into a Miata or Civic. Engine sourcing, ITB compatibility, oil squirter note, and what makes this the ultimate high-revving swap.
The Honda F20C is the benchmark naturally aspirated 2.0L engine of the modern era — 237 hp from a non-turbo 2.0L with a 9,000 RPM redline. In a Miata, it produces a machine that weighs under 2,400 lbs and screams through corners.
Sourcing: F20C engines come from Honda S2000 AP1 models (2000–2003, 240hp) and AP2 (2004–2009, 237hp with a slightly more torque-friendly tune). Both are excellent. Running cores with 60,000–90,000 miles run $3,000–5,000. The S2000 transmission is a beautiful piece and worth keeping if the chassis allows.
For Miata: Sector111 and Flyin Miata both make F20C swap mount kits for the NA/NB chassis. The engine sits well in the bay with the right adapter plates. The S2000 oil pan may need modification depending on kit.
Oil squirter note: The F20C (AP1 specifically) has piston oil squirters that require oil pressure to function. Never dry-crank this engine — prime the oiling system before first start by cranking with the injector fuse removed.
ECU: The Hondata FlashPro is the definitive F20C tune solution. For chassis swap situations, the AEM Infinity or Haltech Elite 2500 gives you full standalone control.
The F20C does not like being over-revved cold. Always let it warm up fully before pushing to high RPM. Once warm, it rewards you with one of the most intoxicating sounds and feelings in naturally aspirated performance.
