How to swap the Subaru EJ257 STI engine into a WRX chassis. What fits, what needs modification, ECU options, supporting mods, and the realistic power ceiling of the boxer turbo.
The EJ257 STI engine in a WRX chassis is the most direct path to factory STI performance. The engine physically fits the WRX bay and uses the same AWD drivetrain layout — but there are important compatibility details to get right.
Engine sourcing: JDM STI short blocks and complete engines are widely available. EJ257 complete assemblies with 50,000–80,000 km run $3,500–5,500. USDM donor engines from 2004–2021 STIs are also excellent. Inspect for rod knock before purchase — the EJ257 is known for spun rod bearings on high-mileage examples.
Drop-in compatibility: The EJ257 physically bolts to the WRX drivetrain but the ECU is a different story. The STI and WRX ECUs are not interchangeable without modification. The cleanest solution is a full STI swap using the STI ECU, wiring harness, and AVCS hardware together.
ECU: For a complete swap, use the matching STI ECU with EcuFlash or a Cobb Accessport for tuning. For a built motor on a standalone, the AEM Infinity 6 or Link G4X WRX/STI plug-in are excellent choices.
Supporting mods: The EJ257 above 350whp requires upgraded fuel injectors (550cc minimum), a larger fuel pump, and an upgraded TMIC or FMIC intercooler. ARP head studs are mandatory above 400whp — EJ257 head gaskets fail from boost spike without them.
Power ceiling: With factory internals, 350–380whp is the reliable ceiling on pump 91. Built with Manley rods and Cosworth pistons on E85, the EJ257 can reliably make 450–500whp. Beyond that, you are into STI community-specific builds that require expert tuning.
