The 4BT Cummins in a Jeep Wrangler is one of the greatest off-road builds imaginable. You get 265–420 lb-ft of torque starting at 1,500 RPM, diesel economy that doubles your range, and an engine that will outlast the vehicle around it.
Sourcing a 4BT: These engines came in bread delivery vans, step vans, and light industrial equipment. A clean core with under 150,000 miles runs $2,000–4,000. Mechanical injection engines (pre-1994) are preferred for off-road because they do not require electronics to run.
The 4BT is compact — it is the same footprint as a 360 cubic inch V8, so it fits the Wrangler TJ/YJ/JK engine bay with appropriate mounts. Novak Conversions and Advance Adapters both make Jeep-specific 4BT mount kits.
Transmission: The NV4500 5-speed manual is the ideal pairing — massive torque capacity, a wide first gear ratio, and bulletproof reliability. The NP231 or NP241 transfer case adapts to the NV4500 with a short adapter. Novak Conversions makes these adapters.
Fuel system: The mechanical injection pump requires a lift pump sending about 15–20 PSI to the injection pump. Add a Racor fuel filter with water separator — debris and water kill injection pumps.
Cooling note: Diesels produce less heat than gas engines. Your stock Jeep radiator is usually sufficient, but add an intercooler if running elevated boost levels.
Trail tips: Carry extra fuel filters. Watch water entry in deep crossings — the 4BT intake is low. Add a snorkel for serious water crossings. The 4BT gets better mileage at trail speeds than any gas engine you could put in the Jeep.
