Beginner-friendly guide to swapping a Honda B18C or B18C5 into an EG/EK Civic. Best donor vehicles, mounts, ECU chipping, and first tune advice.
The B18C swap into a Civic is the classic Honda upgrade path, and it remains one of the best bang-for-buck performance builds in the sport compact world. The Integra Type-R B18C5 — with its 8,200 RPM redline and race-inspired high-compression tune — transforms any Civic into a true driver machine.
Engine selection: The B18C5 from a DC2 Integra Type-R is the crown jewel. Type-R motors run $1,800–3,500 used depending on mileage. The B18C1 from the Acura GS-R is a more affordable alternative at $800–1,400. Both are excellent.
Mounts: Hasport and Innovative both make excellent B-series mount kits for EG (1992–1995) and EK (1996–2000) Civics. For most street builds, 62A durometer mounts are the sweet spot between vibration isolation and performance.
Transmission: Use the matching GSR or Type-R transmission. The Type-R transmission has a shorter final drive (4.40) that makes the car feel more reactive. GSR trans (4.25 final) is more highway-friendly.
ECU: The stock B18C5 ECU (P73) is actually quite good for a naturally aspirated build. Burning a socketed P30 or P28 with a custom basemap is a budget-friendly way to dial in the tune. For the best results, have a tuner dyno-tune it with Neptune RTP or Hondata.
First start tips: Prime the oil system before first crank. Double-check coolant routing — the B18 routing is slightly different from the stock D-series. Verify idle air control valve connections. The engine should idle cleanly between 750–900 RPM when warmed up.
