Complete 4G63T swap guide using the Evo engine platform. Engine sourcing (Evo VIII vs IX), AWD considerations, standalone ECU options, and tuning the EVO power unit.
The 4G63T from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is one of the most proven turbocharged four-cylinders ever built. Stock internals hold 400whp reliably, and a fully built version is a 600–700whp platform on pump E85.
Engine selection: The Evo IX (2006) 4G63 has the best factory spec — balanced crank, improved rods, and the strongest piston rings of the generation. Evo VIII is also excellent. Avoid non-Evo 4G63 variants (Eclipse, Galant) for performance builds — they lack the improved internals.
AWD integration: The 4G63 in its natural Evo habitat is AWD. For other chassis (WRX engine replacement), maintaining AWD uses the factory transfer case and front diff with appropriate driveshaft adapters. Rear-wheel-drive conversions in drift builds require significant drivetrain work.
Building the short block: For builds under 450whp, factory internals are fine. Above that, install Manley or Wiseco pistons (8.5:1 for E85, 9.0:1 for pump 91) and Manley H-beam connecting rods. ARP 625 head studs are mandatory above 400whp.
Turbocharger: The stock EVO IX turbo (TD05H-16G) is good to about 320whp. The TD06-20G is a popular street upgrade for 380–420whp. For 450whp+, the EFR 7163 or Garrett G25-550 on a quality manifold is the move.
ECU: The AEM Infinity 6, Haltech Elite 2500, or Link G4X are all excellent. Evo Engine Management expert tuners are available worldwide — find one who has logged experience with the specific platform before booking a tune.
