Complete 1JZ-GTE swap guide for 240SX, E36, and RX-7. Engine sourcing, single turbo conversion, standalone ECU, and what makes it the ideal drift build engine.
The 1JZ-GTE is lighter than its famous 2JZ sibling, makes a seriously addictive sound, and runs 280–500whp in a manageable, approachable package. For drift and spirited street builds, the 1JZ is often the smarter choice.
Engine sourcing: The 1JZ-GTE came in early JZX90/JZX100 Chasers, Marks IIs, and Cresta sedans. Good running cores run $1,500–3,000 imported. Compression test all six cylinders; head cracking is uncommon but worth checking.
The stock twin-turbo setup (CT12A pair) is good to about 320whp. For a cleaner setup and more top-end power, a single turbo conversion is the way to go. A Garrett GT3582 or G30-660 on a Turbonetics or Forward Motion manifold pushes 400–480whp on a pump gas tune.
ECU: Just like the 2JZ, the 1JZ needs a standalone for chassis swaps. The Link G4X and Haltech Sport 2000 are both excellent. The ECUMaster EMU Black is a budget-friendly option that still does everything you need.
Cooling note: The 1JZ runs warm when pushed. Run a quality front-mount intercooler (Treadstone or Process West), an aluminum radiator, and a coolant overflow tank. Add an oil cooler if you plan to track it.
Drift setup tips: For a dedicated drift car, keep the twin turbos for response and low-end torque. The twin setup lights up tires from 3,000 RPM. For a wall-of-power drift style, go single turbo with a bigger wastegate and a slightly higher stall torque converter if running auto.
