Track Prep
Setup Guide

Everything you need to do before your muscle car hits the track — from tire pressures and brake fluid to alignment settings and safety equipment. Don't skip any of it.

Track days expose every weakness in your build. Tires that feel fine on the street fade in lap two. Brake fluid that hasn't been changed in two years boils before you reach the end of the back straight. Oil that's been in the sump for 5,000 miles shears under sustained high-RPM load. This guide covers every step of a proper pre-track prep — in the order to do it.

This guide applies to Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Charger, and Corvette track day prep. Specific fitment and tire recommendations link out to dedicated guides for each model.

Pre-Track Prep Checklist

01

Tire Prep

Reduce pressures to 28–32 PSI front / 30–34 PSI rear for most track tires. Sticky summer performance tires (Michelin PS4S, Bridgestone RE-71RS) require lower cold pressures than road tires. Check for wear, cords, and sidewall damage before every session.

Brake Preparation

Flush your brake fluid to DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 before a track day — standard DOT 3 boils under sustained braking. Upgrade to high-temp pads (Hawk DTC-60, Carbotech XP10) and bed them properly. Check rotor thickness and inspect for heat cracks.

Cooling System

Track days push coolant, oil, and transmission temperatures far beyond street driving. A fresh radiator flush, upgraded coolant, and an auxiliary oil cooler prevent thermal throttling and engine damage during extended sessions.

Suspension Setup

Alignment matters more than any other single setting on a track day. Get a proper four-wheel alignment before your first session. Increase front negative camber (-1.5° to -2.5° for most muscle cars) to maximize front tire contact patch under load.

Safety Equipment

A full-face helmet (Snell SA2020+) is required at virtually every track day. Consider gloves, fire-resistant clothing, and a HANS device for high-speed events. Remove loose items from the cabin — unsecured objects become projectiles under hard braking.

Fluid & Consumables

Change engine oil and filter before your first track day of the season. Use a track-specific oil (Motul 300V, Amsoil Dominator) with high film strength under heat. Check power steering fluid, differential fluid, and transmission fluid while you're in there.
